Blast From the Past for May 8th: John Martin

When I saw these shots recently posted by screamapillar (thank you), I had to share them. John Martin was a model in the 90's who was frequently seen in beefcake shots and calendars. These shots come from a 1996 Hearthrobs calendar. This was a time when I was just out of my teens and before I had the Internet. I was still safely yet oh so unhappily tucked in the closet. It was also the time when 'Beefcake' calendars and posters, not to mention The Chippendale's, were all the rage. I often opened up the poster rack at K-Mart, pretending to look at some beautiful babe, yet quickly turning to the next poster of a great looking guy, often in the 90's in cut offs. These shots of John really take me back, there is something so 90's about them, the lighting, the tan, the hair. Also the fact that back then all traces of body hair were not shaved off.

Blast From The Past for May 2nd: Matt Bomer in 'Guiding Light'

It was back in 2002 that this scene was shown on 'Guiding Light'. Since I did not watch the show, I did not know who Matt Bomer was at that time. But...thanks to the Internet and caps from this scene I quickly became a fan. Matt Bomer is a talented actor who went on to success after he left the soap in 2003. Although his most recent role was in the acclaimed 'White Collar', I actually enjoyed Matt more in the short lived 'Traveler'. The caps are not the best, but I am happy to have found the video on youtube thanks to a poster on DC. Blast From The Past for April 12: Dirk Benedict

It astounds me sometimes how many of the men I love are connected somehow to my childhood and my parents. Sort of scary actually. One of the reasons I love sports so much is due to all the time watching sports on tv with my dad and older brother as a kid. Another show that was popular with my dad and brother was The A Team. I would sit with them every week watching this as a kid. I can't say I ever really liked The A Team, although I did enjoy every time Dirk Benedict would take off his shirt.

When we got our first VCR in the late 80's (we were quite behind) I remember renting the pilot to Battlestar Galactica and watching a young Dirk as Starbuck. I loved the new version of BG but also enjoyed going back and watching the original series on DVD. Katee Sackhoff is hot, but she doesn't hold a candle to the original Starbuck.



It still amazes me to look at magazines from 70's on ebay and see how the tv stars would pose for magazines. Dirk was famous as you can see for the tight pant shots. As you can see Dirk seemed to struggle to keep his pants shut.



Dirk was raised in Montana but headed to New York for his first big break on stage in Butterflies Are Free. What the run of the show ended Dirk received an offer to repeat his performance in Hawaii, opposite Barbara Rush. While there, he appeared as a guest lead on Hawaii Five-O. The producers of a horror film called Ssssss saw Benedict's performance in Hawaii Five-O and promptly cast him as the lead in that movie. From there Dirk began appearing regularly on tv and in movies with his most famous roles being in Chopper One, and as noted Battlestar Galactica and The A Team.



After the cancellation of the The A Team Dirk continued with tv guest shots and the odd movie but his worked slowed down and Dirk has not worked that much on tv the past decade. Dirk also dealt with prostate cancer but refused surgery, and instead claimed to have cured his cancer through a macrobiotic diet recommended by Gloria Swanson, his co-star on Broadway in Butterflies Are Free, and by exercise and fasting. Dirk has been working at reviving his acting career and is due to appear in the new big screen adaptation of The A Team featuring Bradley Cooper.

Blast From The Past for March 24th Steve McQueen

I am too young to remember when Steve McQueen was one of Hollywood's greatest stars, but I do remember watching a couple of his old movies 'The Magnificent Seven' and 'The Great Escape' on the late night movie when I was younger. I do however love when shots like this of old movie stars surface especially when of such a screen icon.

Thanks to Life we get to see Mr. McQueen in 1963 on a patio at his Palm Springs bungalow. Thanks to Matthew Rettenmund at one of my favorite sites, Boy Culture for the heads up!

Blast from the Past for February 10th Battle Of The Network Stars

By the time I was old enough to actually enjoy watching Battle Of The Network Stars in the late 80's it was going off the air. That does not mean I have not enjoyed watching clips on the net and seeing various stars from the 70's and 80's in their speedos!

Recently I purchased a few old episodes on DVD on Ebay. (They are not from the original airings however, but from repeats on Trio). The quality is horrible, the sound just as bad but I still have been enjoying them very much. Where else can you see Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Richard Hatch, Charlene Tilton, Valerie Bertinelli, Lou Ferrigno, Debby Boone, Lavar Burton, William Shatner and David Letterman battling it out. Tons of fun! I look forward to buying more!
