TV Tidbits:

The television season is beginning to wind down with summer approaching. I also wondered why the networks have not abandoned the current tv season format and move to a 12 month season. Some networks, ABC in particular, kill their shows by taking multi month log breaks which really screw up viewership. If they planned better it could be done in a way that did not destroy the momentum many shows gain then lose due to the long breaks.

May sweeps are just around the corner, but some shows are already starting the desperate attempts to gain viewership. I loath when producers begin using terms like 'life altering events', 'life or death decisions' and 'one life hangs in the balance' when describing their episodes, especially their finales. This particular life finds them overly manipulative and in addition they are used so often, they have lost their power. Really, what 'life altering event' could really mean anything on 'Big Bang Theory'.

One person desperate to continue to attract attention in Oprah. Oprah should have left the air about 3 or 4 years ago. At that time she might have gone out with more respect. Some of her shows the past year or so are no better than Jerry Springer. Her interview with Rielle Hunter this week is a prime example. Oprah can longer claim to be 'above it all' when she does interviews like this one. I would also bet you don't see any of Tiger Woods mistress's on Oprah either...

In other talk show news, was Elisabeth Hasselbeck serious when she said Melissa Etheridge was over to her house the other night watching Dancing With The Stars together? I have been liking Hasselbeck more and more the past year (I know she is annoying and you all will think I am nuts, but I think she is more liberal than anyone on that panel, Joy included, except for Goldberg) but this would take the cake.

You all know I have lovedIdol the past 8 years,and... most of you know I now have totally lost interest... But I am going to start back up again next week. I love the Idol's finale's and right now am hoping for an upset with Lee winning. Not likely I know but I am a fan of the underdog and even though Crystal is the clear favorite, I cannot see ever buying her album, but Lee's I might.

I am still head over heals for GLEE who has Olivia Newton-John as one of several guest stars this week when the 'Glist' becomes the center of drama.

Kudos to Glee

You all know I love Glee. It is not a perfect show, it has it's flaws. Yet...it, and Ryan Murphy are so able to hit raw nerves in me. Not just hit, but hit and push in hard. Then...end with a musical number. What more can you ask from a tv show...

A highlight last night was Matthew Morrison and Kristin Chenoweth's mash up of One Less Bell To Answer / A House Is Not A Home. I really love how Glee opens me, and others up to new music. Amazing performances by Matthew and Kristin. Kudos!

Last Chance to Save Accidentally On Purpose

Ok...
Since last fall I have encouraged you all to check out the CBS comedy 'Accidentally On Purpose'. I have talked about the great acting, the great writing, the hilarious cast (love you Lennon Parham). I have talked about creator and producer Claudia Lonow and her talented team or writers, producers and directors. I have talked about Grant Show, Ashley Jensen, Jenna Elfman and Bryan Cuprill. I have posted a poll to help save the show (you can still fill it out HERE:).

Not much else I can do. Tonight it is do or die with the season finale. I ask one more time for you all to check it out. If my talking about the writing, the acting, and the many laughs have not got you to give it a try...let me use an argument that might be more effective...

Tonights TV

Can't wait for tonight's long awaited Madonna themed Glee (and this from a non Madonna fan...don't hate me!)

Also, though not on til tomorrow, thought I would give some notice (and I will be making another post tomorrow) that Wednesday nights airing of Accidentally On Purpose marks the last show of the season. The List: Pamela Anderson

Although I know many check out FH for the pictures, I know there are few of you out there who also read my ramblings from time to time. I have talked in some of my past posts about my life and my struggle to come out in my 20's. Up until that point the I had only had sex with women and in fact was engaged until I finally got the strength to be honest with myself. I did not hate sex with women, in fact I quite enjoyed it. I did however know that I was not happy and certainly was missing something.

This leads me to 'the list'. Some of you might find this annoying, (so simply skip by) some might enjoy it and some might even relate. 'The list' in this case is of women I not only love, but as well find sexually attractive.

Let me start by saying up until Dancing With The Stars this season I had little respect for Pamela Anderson. I never watched Baywatch, never really saw her in anything except magazines. I knew of her sex tapes, her playboy layouts and some crazy behavior. Dancing however has shown me another side of this woman. I cannot help it but she has won me over. Even with the hair dye and the fake boobs there is something so naturally sexy about her that it literally pours through the television screen. I never thought I would use natural and Pamela Anderson in the same sentence but watching her dance is surprisingly erotic to me (and it is not just the adorable Damian Whitewood).

I am sure some of you think I am crazy, but I am sure a few of you might relate. I think Pamela going down for her splits on the last episode was one of the most beautiful and sexy things on tv I have seen in awhile. It is very interesting to me when one project can change my feelings about someone so dramatically.

Just Because: Glee

Just Because it is quite silly how excited I am about the return of Glee tonight. I loved the first half of the season and have been awaiting it's return since last years big finale. Glee is not just well written, well acted and hilarious. Glee does something very few shows are able to do, leave you feeling better when the show is over than when it began.

Glee truly takes on it's Musical roots with feel good moments, losers becoming winners and of course all done through an uplifting score. The show was also marketed brilliantly this year. With the hype from last season, the shows pr machine has been working overtime with promos, magazine covers and having the cast just about everywhere (don't tire them out too too much). Next weeks Madonna episode promises to be must see tv.

Kudos to Brothers & Sisters

Kudos to the writers of Brothers and Sisters for last nights outstanding episode. The two hour event took us back 20 plus years to see the Walker siblings in their teens. Although the drama was a bit contrived, it none the less packed a dramatic punch. The episode featured stand out performances by the entire cast, in particular Matthew Rhys and Sally Field.

The show has been horribly uneven this season (and I for one don't enjoy cancer story lines in my tv escapism) but last nights two hours brought the Walker family back together and in conflict. This is what the audience tunes in for. The writers spent far too much of the earlier part of the season on individual story lines. This show excels when the story lines intersect and intertwine.

Just Because: Accidentally on Purpose

I wrote a lengthy blog last week about why I think you all should check out 'Accidentally on Purpose'. AOP is on the bubble and has yet to be picked up for next season. Kudos to Julianne Moore

If I were a long time cast member on a soap opera I think I would want to pull my hair out when soaps are called 'training grounds'. Yes many actors who go on to movies and night time television began on Soaps, but many actors remain. I really don't think David Canary and others require any further training.

I have never watched more than a few seconds of 'As The World Turns' except when I flick by it with the remote. At the same time, the shows cancellation and Julianne Moore's return to the soap this week are significant to me. I have talked before how I used to spend my afternoons after school doing homework in the living room while my mother watched her soaps. (Her favorite was Another World). I think many kids who had stay at home moms have similar memories. I would suspect most soap watchers began with a parent.

I find it sad that many of these shows are going off the air. Yes, television is changing, but whether you like soaps or not they are scripted dramas which hire hundreds of actors, writers, directors and others. The fact these shows are being replaced by more reality type shows (I cannot stand the new trend of Dr Phil's, The Doctors and other reality shows pretending to be talk shows) is sad to me. So many of these shows have decades of history. It is too bad that CBS did not keep both ATWT and Guiding Light and alternate them on the schedule, keeping the history yet cutting down the costs of producing two shows to one. The shows are still making money, that is not the question. They are simply not making enough money for the networks.

So many actors play down their days on soaps or don't discuss them at all. Julianne Moore is not one of them. She always happily discusses her time on the show and the hard work that it was. Julianne is one of the best actress's working today. (Even with Streep and Kidman it was Moore who tore at my heart in 'The Hours'). She excels at every role she takes. Kudos Julianne for returning to the show that began your career. Maybe Demi Moore who hasn't had a decent role in years should take your lead....

Make sure not to miss tonight...

If your a regular reader of FH you know one of my favorite new shows of this season is Accidentally on Purpose. AOP boasts a stellar cast and great writing. I know some critics have not given the show it's due but AOP is the only comedy currently on the air that has me rolling on the floor laughing. Some of the early episodes were a bit inconsistent but as the season went on the show really hit its groove. This cast has a way of creating magic with line delivery and with writer and producer Claudia Lonow at the helm I am looking forward to the remainder of the season.

Currently AOP is 'on the bubble'. On the bubble in tv terms means it is currently at risk of being cancelled. The rating for AOP have been great, the real problem seems to be that CBS currently has one or two sit-coms too many. It is all going to come down to the numbers. My guess is CBS is looking at AOP and closely comparing the numbers to Rules Of Engagement and Gary Unmarried. With AOP going into Gary's Wednesday's time slot it could simply be a question of which of the two shows gets better numbers as the determining factor for who stays.

I hope there is more to the decision because AOP has so much more potential than either of the other two shows. Neither Gary Unmarried or Rules of Engagement have the magic that I see in AOP. Add to that both have been on the air for a few seasons. AOP has taken off in it's first season and it is far more likely to have it's audience continue to grow. It is unlikely after being on the air for 2 or 3 seasons the other two shows are going to bring in any better numbers than they already have.

AOP needs to continue. It is a sit-com whose first season was all about a meeting, a pregnancy and the beginning of a relationship. Next season after the birth, there will be a whole new set of issues for the cast and writers to explore. (Would be a shame to miss Lennon Parham babysitting!)

If you have not checked AOP out be sure to tune into CBS tonight. It is a repeat but it will get you started. If you watch, don't miss it's move to Wednesday beginning tonight. Lets keep this show on the air. AOP may not be getting the critical acclaim of other shows but I tell you it certainly has provided me with some much needed laughs each Monday night.

Law and Order SVU

I boycotted all the Law and Orders and CSI's awhile ago. (I work with people effected by violence and don't need to see it nightly on tv) but...SVU has had some fun guest stars this season and some memorable if not manipulative rating grabbing episodes. Tonight's installment with some of the 80's finest females looks to be a hoot. Jacyln Smith, Susan Anton, Morgan Fairchild and Ann-Margaret head up tonight's guest cast.

Seriously Grey's Anatomy Seriously!

A big thumbs down to actress Katherine Heigl and the producers of Grey's Anatomy.

I know many of you think I am nuts, but I LOVE this show. At this time last year I was caught up in the wedding of Alex and Izzie as she got closer to dying from cancer. Too bad she survived. I was happy at the time... but since her recovery these two characters have been written like shit. Alex especially has been left hanging this season with the writers, despite the characters growth, take him back to the Alex of season 2.

One could blame it all on Heigl but think the Grey's writers are equally responsible. I don't watch this show for Mer and Der (Oh their fans are annoying). I watched for Alex and Izzie.

I painstakingly separated actor from character, and despite the silliness that is Katherine Heigl (no one will write you the material you had on Grey's period) I still loved Izzie. That is why it is so annoying that Heigl is not returning. I am ok she is leaving, but despite her convenient Entertainment Weekly 'save my reputation by admitting to a couple of things' cover story, there is no excuse or no new baby that should have kept her off the set for a day or two to wrap up her storyline with Alex.

People have lots of reasons from DVR's to reality tv as to why hour long dramas are losing ratings. In this case it is the actors and the show itself. Some of us stupidly wasted 5 years rooting for Izzie and Alex (still love ya Justin Chambers) only to have it end this way. A big thumbs down!

Falling In Love Again: Josh Charles

My love affair with actor Josh Charles began in 1989 when as a teen I saw a movie that for many had great significance, 'Dead Poets Society'. Though Carpe diem (seize the day) certainly got over used, I cannot deny the power of that statement and the movie at the time.

Since 1989 I my crush has gone from warm to hot through 'Threesome', 'Sports Night' and 'Four Brothers'. Over the past year it got hot again with Josh's appearance on 'In Treatment'. With Josh now a regular on 'The Good Wife' it is as strong as ever.

If you are not watching 'The Good Wife' you have to ask yourself why. Firstly it is a great concept, putting a new spin on the courtroom drama. Secondly it is fully stacked with amazing actors from Josh and the main cast through supporting players Joe Morton, Alan Cumming. Archie Panjabi is also a standout playing a great role. Also, since it is filmed in New York you will see many familiar faces from the New York stage. Superb acting and directing are just the icing on the cake. It is no wonder Entertainment Weekly named 'The Good Wife' televisions best new show.

Josh Charles has been mainly working on television the past few years but besides his extensive movie career, Josh has an extensive theatre background. Josh appears to take great care in choosing roles both on stage and on film. This has resulted in some outstanding performances. Hopefully the 'The Good Wife' will stick around for awhile so I don't need any more breaks from my Love for actor Josh Charles.
